Muránska planina National Park

is one of the youngest national parks in Slovakia. It is unique in that large-scale human impact has not penetrated the difficult-to-access central part of the area, allowing it to retain its natural character. Within the project, the National Park focuses on transforming forest management towards close-to-nature forestry. This improves conditions for endangered bird species such as the Western Capercaillie, Three-toed Woodpecker, and Eurasian Pygmy Owl. Before logging operations, attention is paid to preserving black honeysuckle, as it is the host plant for the larvae of the rare Carpathian longhorn beetle. The Muránska planina site is also exceptional for its semi-natural grasslands, where the absence of proper management negatively affects meadow species. By combining tree and shrub removal with regular manual or mechanical mowing, conditions are improved for butterflies such as the Apollo, Scarce Copper, and Large Blue, as well as for several protected bird species.

National Forest Centre

is a contributory organisation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of the Slovak Republic. It comprehensively ensures forest research and development tasks in all areas of forestry and related sectors, addressing issues connected with the natural environment and human activities within it, as well as research on non-productive, landscape-forming, ecological, and socio-economic impacts of forests, forestry, and agroforestry under Slovak conditions. Within the IP LIFE NATURA 2000 project, it coordinates the introduction of agroforestry systems in the project areas of Poľana and Záhorie, and cooperates in the design and implementation of close-to-nature forest management and management measures aimed at restoring habitats of the Western Capercaillie in the Poľana and Muránska planina project areas.

Slovak Water Management Enterprise

is a state-owned organisation under the Ministry of the Environment of the Slovak Republic. It manages surface and groundwater resources and carries out comprehensive hydro-ecological activities within river basins. Within the integrated LIFE – IP NATURA 2000 SVK project, it is responsible for implementing the restoration of freshwater habitats, such as reopening side arms, restoring riverbank habitats, and adapting hydrological regimes in the Záhorie and Latorica project sites. In these areas, it ensures the restoration of water flow in the Morava River basin branches and, in eastern Slovakia, the re-watering of one of the Tice river arms and the Tajba Nature Reserve, which is important for the occurrence of the European pond turtle – the only native turtle species living in Slovakia.

WWF Slovakia

is a civic association established in March 2019 as part of the broader international WWF Central and Eastern Europe (WWF CEE) network, which, under its original name WWF Danube-Carpathian Programme, has been actively involved for twenty years in nature conservation, relevant policy development, and public awareness-raising in the Danube-Carpathian region. WWF Slovakia operates within three programme areas – forests, freshwater, and wildlife. All activities are accompanied by intensive communication towards the public, aiming to increase awareness of the need for nature conservation in Slovakia. In this project, WWF is involved in preparing supporting documentation for the implementation of specific conservation activities in the pilot areas of Záhorie, Muránska planina, and Poľana.

DAPHNE – Institute of Applied Ecology

is an association established in 1993 focused on nature conservation, including environmental education. Its main goal is to provide professional expertise for nature conservation in the field of applied research, monitoring, and management of natural habitats.

Within the project, DAPHNE organises data collection on habitats and species that are subjects of protection in Sites of Community Importance but for which insufficient information is available. In cooperation with the State Nature Conservancy of the Slovak Republic, DAPHNE is also responsible for environmental education. The aim is to strengthen the capacities of staff and educators in eco-centres / information centres / nature centres and to prepare various public events.

Faculty of Natural Sciences, Comenius University in Bratislava

was established in 1940. Since 1990, when the environmental section was created, its basic research has been expanded to include activities related to applied ecological research for nature conservation purposes. Within the project, it oversees the preparation of methodology and monitoring to determine the baseline status of indicator species of biodiversity in the target ecosystems. Among the well-known endangered species addressed by the measures are the European pond turtle, Alpine longhorn beetle, White-backed Woodpecker, and Eurasian otter. Additionally, the Faculty is responsible for preparing a study analysing the resilience of the target characteristics of Natura 2000 sites in relation to climate change.
