Muránska planina is one of Slovakia’s wildest national parks, exceptionally diverse and rich in species. It is dominated by forests and grasslands, with wetlands and peat bogs also found throughout the area.
- By opening up forest stands, we are creating better conditions for the survival of the endangered Western Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus).
- We are restoring semi-natural grasslands that provide habitat for rare pollinators such as the Large Blue butterfly (Phengaris arion) and the extremely rare and critically endangered Apollo butterfly (Parnassius apollo).
The Apollo butterfly is a rare jewel among butterflies, adorning the warm rocky habitats of the Muránska planina.

Muránska planina is full of beautiful meadows where we actively manage grassland habitats. Grazing by livestock is essential for their long-term conservation.
